The Devon village of Sheepwash lies in the Torridge district of the county about 9 miles north east of Holsworthy. On Friday 15th September 1865, in conjunction with North Devon, the village held a race meeting. The course was across a number of fields in Sheepwash, providing spectators with a good view of the entire proceedings as well as the surrounding countryside and the wild hills of Dartmoor. The Purse of Guineas was won by Mr Budd’s Sorrel, while the Silver Tankard went to Mr Ashton’s Aunt Sally. The final Hurdle race was won by Mr Goss’s Telegraph. Despite the obvious success of the racing, no further meetings were held. |
